Key takeaways

  1. Replit's agent cost almost $300 in 13 days, and the website still was not finished.
  2. Claude Code finished it in 5 weeks on a $100/month plan that was already paid for.
  3. Per-request billing makes you hesitate. A flat plan lets you experiment.

The project: a real business website built with AI

The goal was not a landing page. It was a complete website for a real small business, with its own content management system, SEO and 93 pages. The test was simple: can someone without a coding background build that with AI?

A Google search for how to build a website easily led to Replit. Everything runs in the browser, an AI agent writes the code and hosting is included. What was not clear at the start was how the billing works.

What Replit's agent built in 13 days

The agent was fast. In under two weeks it built a content management system, a design system, a contact form and dozens of versions of the home page. On the busiest day it made 120 commits.

If you have never written code, that feels like magic. Then the invoices started coming.

The Replit invoices: how almost $300 adds up

Replit has a monthly plan with some credits included. After that, you pay for every request the agent makes, and the smarter modes cost more. In the first day and a half the agent used $30.

After that, an invoice arrived every time usage crossed $50: August 24th, August 27th, September 1st and September 4th. With the plan and tax added, the total was $297 in 13 days, and the website was not done.

The vibe coding trap

When every attempt costs money but the agent never says no, you keep asking for one more version. The home page hero was redone again and again, and the project reached 556 commits.

That number is inflated, because Replit saves a checkpoint after every small step, so its commits are tiny. Commits are not a measure of progress. The bill, however, is real.

Switching to Claude Code: 5 weeks, zero extra cost

On September 4th the project moved to Claude Code. It runs on your own computer in your own project folder and is included in a flat subscription, here the Max plan at $100 a month that was already used for other work.

On the first day it moved the whole project off Replit: its own login system, images stored in its own database instead of Replit storage, and a Docker setup that runs anywhere. Over the next 5 weeks it migrated the SEO from the old site, added redirects for every old page, 56 local landing pages, an editor for the owner, speed fixes and analytics.

The client sent 21 minutes of screen recordings with feedback, and AI turned them into 159 tasks. The extra cost for all of this was zero.

Before vs after: design and SEO

The old site is built on WordPress with a page builder and a template. The new one has a custom design, real photos of the company's work, every service one click away and a price calculator on the service pages.

Google's Lighthouse gives both sites 100 for SEO because it only checks the basics. In the details, the old site has 19 pages Google can find and the new one has 91, including 56 local pages, one for each town where the company has done work. The new site tells Google it is a local construction business with its address, services and nine answers to real customer questions.

On the old homepage, 17 out of 20 images have no description for Google. On the new one, zero out of 30. Pages were planned around real keyword data, and every old address redirects to its new page.

Before vs after: code and speed

The old homepage loads 18 separate scripts from eight domains, with at least five plugins underneath. The new one loads one script from one domain with zero plugins, and four times less JavaScript.

On mobile, Lighthouse performance went from 40 to 57, and the main content shows up after 8 seconds instead of 21. On desktop it went from 67 to 83. A score of 57 is still not great, because the new homepage has more photos and is too heavy, and that is the next fix.

Verdict: check how the AI builder bills you

Replit is not the villain. It is the easiest start, with no setup, hosting included and everything in the browser. Claude Code needs a terminal, Git and your own hosting, and learning it took tens of hours.

The real difference is how billing changes your behavior. On a meter you hesitate, on a flat plan you experiment. Before you pick an AI builder, check one thing: does it bill per request or flat?

FAQ

How much does Replit's AI agent cost?

Replit has a monthly plan with some credits, then charges for every agent request, with smarter modes costing more. In this project the bill reached $297 in 13 days, including the plan and tax, with invoices every time usage crossed $50.

How much does Claude Code cost?

Claude Code is included in a flat subscription. The video uses the Max plan at $100 a month, and the 5 weeks of work on the website added zero extra cost because the price does not change with the number of requests.

Is Replit or Claude Code better for beginners?

Replit is the easier start: no setup, hosting included, everything in the browser. Claude Code needs a terminal, Git and your own hosting, and learning it took tens of hours, but its flat pricing makes experimenting cheaper.

Can you build a full business website with AI?

In this test, yes. Claude Code finished a custom TypeScript and React site with a content management system, 56 local landing pages, redirects and an owner editor. One person with an AI subscription built what used to be agency work.
